You’ve picked the Spanish town where you want to move to, started sorting through a lifetime of belongings and perhaps even imagined where you’ll have your first morning coffee (al fresco on a bar terrace, like most Spanish people do). But then you open the BLS visa appointment website and find the same message you saw the day before: no appointments available.

For many Americans planning a move to Spain, getting through the BLS calendar has become one of the most frustrating parts of their relocation process. At GuiriGuru, our clients have reported difficulty finding appointments, particularly through BLS, leaving them wondering how to prepare their paperwork when they don’t know when they’ll be allowed to submit it.

If that sounds familiar, don’t assume your move is off. An empty calendar tells you what is available at that moment, rather than what might open tomorrow. With a sensible checking routine, the right contacts and your documents organized, you can put yourself in a better position when an appointment appears.

What is BLS, and why do you have to use it?

BLS International is an external company that some Spanish consulates in major US cities have hired to manage visa appointments, collect visa applications and handle administrative tasks, while the consulate remains responsible for approving or refusing your visa.

NLV through BLS

Applicants in these consular districts are currently asked to submit Non-Lucrative Visa applications through BLS.
NLV direct with the consulate
New YorkBoston
These consulates currently handle NLV applications directly.

If your consulate has assigned your visa category to BLS, you must use that channel rather than apply directly with the consulate, even when appointments are scarce.

Arrangements vary by visa type and can change. Always check your own consulate’s current instructions on its official website.

Start with the consulate responsible for where you live

Before you spend another morning refreshing a BLS booking page, make sure you’re using the correct office and visa category. Your consular district depends on your place of residence, so you can’t simply choose a quieter consulate because yours is busy.

This matters especially in a large state like California, where applicants fall under different consulates depending on where they live in the state. Someone applying in the Los Angeles region must follow instructions from the Spanish consulate in Los Angeles, while Northern California residents need to check the San Francisco consulate’s requirements (both Los Angeles and San Francisco currently work with BLS).

In Texas, the Houston Spanish consulate directs NLV applicants to BLS Houston, and Florida applicants must use BLS Miami. If you live in New York, start with the New York consulate’s current instructions for your particular visa.

For a Non-Lucrative Visa, look for the appropriate national visa category on your local consulate’s website. A Schengen tourist visa appointment won’t serve the same purpose.

Wherever you live, our guide will help you find your starting point.

Smarter ways to catch a BLS appointment

1
Timing tip

Give month-end a little more attention

Some applicants have reported that appointments seem to appear around the end of the month and the first few days of the following month, making this a useful period to watch more closely.

This means that the last seven days of the month and the first few days of the next are worth extra attention.

Treat this as a useful checking window rather than a published nationwide schedule, and keep checking during the rest of the month, too.

2
Daily routine

Try early mornings, but vary your routine

Some applicants have reported success checking early in the morning, including around 6:30 a.m. That makes it worth trying, although it isn’t a guaranteed release time.

Build a routine you can actually sustain, perhaps checking early, again during the working day and once in the evening, with extra attention around month-end. If you’re applying as a couple, taking turns can make the process less exhausting.

  3. 🌙

  4. 📅

The aim is to check consistently without letting the BLS booking website take over your life.

Lawyer’s advice

Contact BLS directly and ask specific questions

We’ve spoken with our Spanish immigration lawyer about these difficulties, and she recommends trying to reach someone at the consulate or at BLS to explain your situation and ask how to proceed.

A short, specific enquiry gives the person reading it something practical to answer. Include:

  • Your visa type
  • State and county of residence
  • Number of applicants
  • How long you’ve been trying
  • Screenshot of the message you’re seeing
To: Your BLS office (official contact details)
Subject: Non-Lucrative Visa appointment availability

We are two residents of your consular district preparing Non-Lucrative Visa applications. We have been checking the BLS booking system regularly but cannot find appointments. Could you confirm that we are using the correct category, when further appointments are expected to be released, and whether there is an official cancellation or waiting-list procedure?

Use the contact details published on your BLS office’s official website.
4
If you remain stuck

Ask the consulate for guidance

If BLS cannot resolve the problem, contact the consulate responsible for your district, attaching your earlier correspondence and dated screenshots.

Explain what you’ve tried and ask how applicants should proceed when the designated system shows no availability. If documents are approaching their validity limits, include their issue dates so the situation is clear.

This won’t guarantee an appointment or permission to bypass the booking system, but it gives the responsible office an opportunity to advise you and creates a written record of your attempts.

Keep correspondence together and follow up politely in line with the office’s published response guidance.

Be ready to finish the booking

Finding an appointment is frustrating enough without losing it while searching for a passport number or waiting for an account-verification email.

  • Set up your BLS account in advanceWhere the system requires one
  • Keep applicant details handyFor your entire party, not just yourself
  • Book every applicantIf you’re applying as a family, check whether your BLS center lets you book everyone together. Some centers offer family bookings, but make sure every applicant is covered by the appointment confirmation.
  • Check spam and junk foldersFor verification messages, replies and confirmations
  • Save your confirmationReview the date, location, category and applicant details
  • Screenshot any errorsSeparate a technical problem from a simple lack of availability

If the BLS website appears broken, an updated browser or private window may help identify a browser issue, although it won’t create appointments that haven’t been released.

Keep your document hunt moving without letting them expire

The awkward part of appointment hunting is balancing preparation against document validity. You want to be ready when a slot appears on the BLS website, without paying to replace certificates that have expired while you wait.

Start with our Non-Lucrative Visa requirements and document checklist, then compare it with your own consulate’s current instructions.

Keep a simple tracker showing what you have, when it was issued, whether it needs an apostille or sworn translation, and when it must be submitted.

Don’t assume every document has the same three-month validity period. Requirements vary by document and office.

Organize the predictable parts early, then coordinate medical certificates, background checks, apostilles, translations and insurance around a realistic application timeline. Keep travel and shipping arrangements flexible until your visa is approved.

Be careful with promises of guaranteed appointments

When you’ve been checking for weeks, someone offering a guaranteed appointment can sound tempting. BLS warns applicants about intermediaries selling appointments or claiming special access, so use official channels and question promises of preferential treatment.

Professional relocation support can help you organize documents, understand requirements and communicate with the relevant offices. An appointment, however, should never be presented as something a third party can guarantee.

Can Americans apply for an NLV from Spain instead?

Confirmed by our immigration lawyer

An American visiting Spain cannot submit an initial Non-Lucrative Visa application from inside Spain simply because appointments are unavailable back home.

The initial NLV application must go through the competent Spanish consulate or its designated provider abroad (BLS). Arriving as a tourist doesn’t create an alternative NLV application route.

Other residence routes may allow applications from Spain, but you must qualify for that particular route and meet its conditions and deadlines.

Which routes can be applied for in Spain?

Before spending months chasing an appointment, check that you’re pursuing the route that fits your circumstances.

Visa or residence routeWhere can you apply?
Non-Lucrative VisaAbroad only
Initial application abroad through your competent consulate or designated provider.
Digital Nomad VisaAbroad or in Spain
Through a consulate abroad, or for the relevant residence authorization while legally in Spain, if eligible.
Student VisaAbroad or in Spain
Through a consulate abroad; certain qualifying higher-education applications can be submitted in Spain under specific conditions and deadlines.
Residence with a non-Spanish EU spouseIn Spain
Eligible family members generally apply for their residence card in Spain after joining or accompanying their EU relative.
Residence with a Spanish spouseIn Spain or abroad
An application in Spain may be available when both spouses are there and meet the applicable rules; a consular route also exists.

Applying from Spain still involves later appointments for fingerprints and to collect your residence card, so it helps to understand the whole process before booking your flight.
