So you’ve decided to move to Spain. You’ve even reserved an apartment in Valencia, started practicing “una caña, por favor,” and have already told everyone about your move. Then, halfway through gathering your non lucrative visa paperwork, someone asks: “Hang on, are you planning to keep working?”
Of course you are. Your American employer is happy for you to work remotely, and your salary will still land in your American bank account. Surely that’s fine?
Here’s where the Spanish visa paperwork makes its first plot twist:
The Non-Lucrative Visa doesn’t permit work, including remote work for an employer outside Spain.
“Non-lucrative” isn’t Spanish for “I promise not to take a local job.”
It’s an easy mistake to make, and an expensive one to discover after you’ve paid for apostilles, sworn translations, and flights. Your documents might be beautifully organized. They might just be beautifully organized for the wrong visa.
At GuiriGuru, we help you check the correct visa route before you start collecting the paperwork. A conversation with GuiriGuru’s relocation experts now can save you a lot of “but someone on Facebook said…” later.
A free Spain relocation consultation gives you a chance to catch those problems before you spend money on translations, insurance, or travel. With GuiriGuru, the process starts with a free conversation about your move, followed by a consultation with an independent Spanish immigration lawyer. Together, practical coordination and professional legal advice turn an exciting idea into a workable plan.
Your move deserves more than an internet checklist
Moving to Spain involves questions that a generic checklist cannot answer.
- Are you retiring or continuing to work?
- Will your spouse apply with you?
- Have you lived outside the United States?
- Which Spanish consulate covers your home address?
Even apparently straightforward applications deserve attention. A background report may contain an old entry, an incomplete court outcome, or information you did not expect. That is a reason to seek confidential legal advice early, rather than guess what it means for your eligibility.
The lawyer can assess the circumstances and identify any supporting records needed. GuiriGuru helps coordinate the practical steps around that advice.
Neither a consultation nor a complete document packet guarantees approval, but preparation can reduce avoidable mistakes and delays.
Start with a free call, then get advice for your case
-
A free call with GuiriGuru
Your first GuiriGuru consultation focuses on your plans: where you want to live, when you want to move, your household, and how you intend to support yourself.
-
A consultation with an independent lawyer
The next step is a consultation with an independent Spanish immigration lawyer who will review your circumstances and advise on the best legal route.
GuiriGuru provides planning, coordination, and project management.
Legal advice and application preparation are handled by the independent lawyer under the services you agree with their firm.
That gives you someone to organize the process and a qualified professional to answer the legal questions.
Bring your questions to that first conversation, including the uncomfortable ones. An old background-record entry, a dependent living abroad, or an employer unsure about overseas work can change what the next steps are. Explaining your situation at the beginning gives the lawyer a clearer picture and helps us build a realistic schedule. You do not need to arrive knowing every answer; that is why you are booking support.
The Non-Lucrative Visa: for life in Spain without working
For Americans retiring or living from savings, pensions, or other qualifying resources, the Non-Lucrative Visa can be a suitable route. The essential condition is that you will live in Spain without carrying out work, including remote work for an American employer.
For one applicant in 2026, the financial reference is €28,800 for the initial year, with an additional €7,200 for each accompanying dependent.
However, showing sufficient resources involves more than pointing to one account balance. Your consulate may require:
- Recent statements
- A bank certificate showing historical balances
- Tax documents
- Evidence of regular non-working income
You also need appropriate health coverage and the required identity, medical, and background documents.
A travel insurance policy should not be treated as a substitute for the comprehensive coverage required for residence.
A consultation helps establish whether this route matches your circumstances and what your particular consulate expects. It also helps couples understand the financial evidence and individual paperwork needed for each applicant.

The Digital Nomad Visa: keep working, change your address
If your Spanish dream includes keeping your American job or serving overseas clients, the Digital Nomad Visa deserves consideration. This route is designed for qualifying international remote workers, with different rules for employees and independent professionals.
Having a laptop and sufficient income is only part of the picture. Applicants must document:
- Their working relationship
- The foreign business
- Permission to work remotely from Spain
- Relevant qualifications or experience
Social Security arrangements also need attention before filing.
There are two main application routes.
Consular visa
A consular visa can provide up to one year.
Residence application in Spain
A residence application made when legally present in Spain can provide up to three years.
The best choice depends on your circumstances and readiness, rather than simply choosing the longer period.
Arriving as a visitor does not give you unlimited time to assemble an application. If you plan to file in Spain, prepare the required documents before travelling and submit while your immigration status permits it. Your lawyer should confirm your filing window.
Healthcare and Social Security must be assessed together. Private insurance does not replace mandatory Social Security obligations, and the evidence needed depends on the arrangement accepted for your application.
Our Digital Nomad Visa guide and free checklist explain the two routes and the paperwork to discuss with the lawyer.
Moving with an EU or Spanish spouse? Check the family route
If your spouse is an EU citizen or Spanish national, you may have a family residence route that better suits your plans. These procedures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Spouse from another EU country
For an American joining a spouse from another EU country, the process generally involves family residence in Spain. The EU citizen’s basis for residence matters: employment, self-employment, or self-sufficiency can affect the resources and healthcare evidence required.
For a self-sufficient couple relocating without qualifying public coverage, comprehensive insurance deserves early attention.
Spouse of a Spanish citizen
Spouses of Spanish citizens generally follow a separate family residence procedure. Standard requirements differ from the Non-Lucrative Visa, including the usual treatment of income and private insurance.
The appropriate filing route depends on where the couple lives and their circumstances.
Relationship certificates, previous marriages, children, and where each family member lives can all affect the plan. Consult before ordering documents or assuming everyone can submit at the same office.

Work backwards from your move, and your appointment
One of the easiest ways to create extra work is to order everything too early. Another is to leave apostilles and translations until the last minute.
Use approximately three-and-a-half months before your intended arrival as a planning checkpoint. By then, aim to have discussed your route, identified the responsible authority, and mapped out the documents and appointments. Contact GuiriGuru earlier if your case involves overseas records, family complications, or an uncertain employment arrangement.
- Planning checkpointAbout 3½ months before arrival
- Time-sensitive documents
- Apostille
- Spanish translation
- Appointment and processing
- Arrival in Spain
That checkpoint is not a universal deadline for ordering certificates. Your timeline must account for the consular appointment, processing, and travel. Some applications need more preparation time.
Document freshness is important, but there is no blanket rule that every document must be less than three months old at both the consular appointment and entry into Spain. For example, Los Angeles currently requires an NLV medical certificate issued within 90 days before application, while its FBI certificate can be up to six months old.
Los Angeles consulate, Non-Lucrative Visa: how old can each document be?
Plan to obtain time-sensitive documents within the window confirmed for your application. Allow time for the appropriate apostille, followed by the required Spanish translation. Your insurance must also begin at the correct time and cover the required period.
GuiriGuru helps turn those separate dates into an organized schedule, so you know what to request now and what to wait on.
From documents to your first appointments in Spain
A successful move continues after the visa decision. Depending on your route, you may need:
- Local address registration
- A residence-card application
- Fingerprint appointments
GuiriGuru’s three relocation packages offer different levels of help, from a document plan to fuller coordination and arrival support. Choose the level that suits your confidence, available time, and household needs.
Consult the relocation packages page for scope and fees. Translations, insurance, apostilles, government charges, and independent legal services have separate costs. Understanding those expenses early makes it easier to budget realistically.
Moving to Spain? You need a relocation consultation
You should be thinking about your first walk along the beach, your favourite neighbourhood café, and the life you want to build. Give the paperwork the attention it needs before it takes over those plans.
A consultation helps you ask the right questions, identify concerns early, and choose a route that fits how you actually want to live.
